Andy Sydow Adds Orchestra in Measure 1

[Nashville, September 29th] – Americana singer-songwriter Andy Sydow is unveiling a new musical project that melds the rich tradition of folk with the elegance of classical music. Inspired by these two seemingly distant genres, Sydow took five of his original songs and arranged them for a String Quartet and french horn. Additionally, the 6-piece ensemble also recorded a haunting rendition of Pearl Jam’s “Just Breathe.” The project is titled, Measure 1.
The first single, "In Love of A Hard Luck Sayer (Orchestra Version)" dropped on September 8th. "Cause for Concern (Orchestra Version)" followed on September 29. Two more singles, “A Better Day (Orchestra Version)” and “Just Want You to Notice Me Again (Orchestra Version)” will come out prior to the full EP being released on December 15. It will be available starting December 1 on Bandcamp and Patreon.
Says Sydow, “It was surreal getting to write for this instrumentation. I remember recording the first song and when the group came in all together for the first time, I almost had to stop playing. It was emotional.”
The EP was recorded live in one day at Mighty Fine Studios in Denver, CO on August 2, 2022. Both audio and video were captured during the session, so along with listening on their favorite streaming platform, fans will also be able to watch the live-take studio performances of every song on Andy’s YouTube channel.
After Measure 1’s release, Sydow plans to tour with this ensemble in 2024. “My hope is to hire classical players in each city to read the sheet music. I think it’ll be a unique and community-driven way of presenting these songs.”
When asked about why he chose to write for orchestral instrumentation, Sydow responded, “I've been a singer and songwriter for as long as I can remember, but as a kid I always had an interest in composing and arranging and music for movies. For this new project, I've put my two musical worlds together. It’s very songwriter-forward, but with a cinematic presentation.”
